Whitman moved atop the NWC women's standings by winning at previously unbeaten No. 5 Lewis and Clark, 88-72.
Heather Lovelace's three-point play gave Whitman the halftime lead 35-32 at Lewis and Clark, and the Lady Missionaries shot 64 percent in the second half (18-for-28) to pull away from the Pioneers for the victory. Whitman forward Sarah Anderegg scored 19 of her 32 points in the second half. Tiffani Traver added 16 points and eight assists for the unranked Lady Missionaries (10-1), whose lone loss came at NAIA Eastern Oregon. The Pioneers slip to 11-1 overall, 2-1 in conference.
No. 24 George Fox, which lost to Lewis and Clark earlier this week, bounced back with a 55-35 win at Linfield.
The NESCAC opened conference play on Friday night with both ranked women's teams winning close games. No. 9 Tufts fended off Williams 61-57 and matched the program's best start ever (12-0). No. 7 Amherst won ugly at Wesleyan (Conn.) 41-37, despite shooting 15 percent from three (3-for-20) and 57 percent from the free-throw line (12-for-21).
No. 1 DePauw kept rolling along in conference play. The Tigers trounced Allegheny 86-50 to win their 37 consecutive regular season game. No. 25 Christopher Newport remained perfect with a 62-50 win at Greensboro. The same goes for Ferrum (9-0) which won in overtime at LaGrange 92-88. Kylene Culler had 18 points and 18 rebounds for Ferrum.
Men's action
No. 2 Middlebury survived a close call in its NESCAC opener as the Panthers edged Bates 59-56. the Bobcats outrebounded Middlebury 42-24 and allowed only three offensive rebounds. Joey Kizel led the Panthers in scoring (17 points), rebounding (seven) and assists (four).
The other two ranked NESCAC teams won more comfortably. No. 21 Williams topped Tufts 83-68 and No. 22 Amherst took care of Wesleyan (Conn.) 75-61.
Union beat Clarkson 87-71 in a battle of the Liberty League teams with the best overall records. Keven Donohue and Terrell Winney each scored 26 points for the Dutchmen (10-1, 2-0).
Devone McLeod's layup with 40 seconds left in overtime lifted Allegheny past DePauw 69-67. Zach Sly did the same for Delaware Valley with 2.1 seconds left as the Aggies nipped New Paltz State 74-72.
