Tuesday wrap: Tourney team turnarounds

Hartwick and Hobart, which made the 2012 NCAA tournament, picked up key conference wins on Tuesday night.

After starting conference play 0-3, Hartwick got back to .500 in the Empire 8 by beating No. 20 Stevens 63-56. Jared Suderly scored 21 points, including 13 from the foul line, and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Hawks (11-6, 3-3). Russ Thompson scored 20 points for the Ducks (14-2, 5-1).

Hobart, which went 4-5 outside the Liberty League, is rolling inside of it. The Statesmen topped Union 82-70 and improved to 5-1 in conference. Stefan Thompson scored 26 points and Connor Rehbaum added 23 and 10 rebounds. Keven Donohue had 24 for the Dutchmen (14-3, 6-2).

On a quiet night for the Top 25, No. 21 Rhode Island College fought past Western Connecticut 56-51. Eastern Connecticut kept pace in the Little East with a win at Keene State, 62-57.

Mitchell shot 67 percent from the field in the second half and dealt Newbury its first conference loss of the season, 73-62. SUNY-Old Westbury defeated Sage 85-73 for its ninth consecutive win against Division III opponents.

In women's action, No. 13 Southern Maine stayed perfect with ease, cruising past Plymouth State 91-52. New Paltz State rallied past Oswego State 56-53 and remained unbeaten. The Lakers had two chances to take the lead in the final 26 seconds but could not convert.
