Playing without its top two scorers, No. 24 Wheaton (Ill.) scrapped past No. 3 UW-Whitewater 66-62 at King Arena on Saturday night.

UW-Whitewater erased a halftime deficit with a 13-1 run early in the second half. The Warhawks pushed tempo against the under-manned Thunder and capitalized on open three-point looks. But once the Warhawks' outside shots stopped falling, the Thunder fought their way back into the game.

The Thunder scored 13 straight points to turn a six-point deficit into a seven-point lead. Maris Hovee controlled the glass with 22 rebounds and finished the game-deciding run by dishing to Chantal Meachem for three. Wheaton guard Ellie Zeller finished with 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting in 35 minutes. The Thunder only used five players.

No. 2 Washington U. shot 40 percent from the field and rolled past Illinois Wesleyan 80-63 in the Midwest challenge hosted by national champions DePauw. The Bears will play top-ranked DePauw tomorrow at 4 pm. The Tigers had no problems with Illinois College and beat the Lady Blues 86-58.

Elsewhere Texas-Dallas continued its hot start with a 77-67 overtime win at Hardin-Simmons. Morgan Kilgore and Amber Brown combined for 45 points and 21 rebounds for the Comets (5-0). No. 25 Trinity (Texas) defeated Division II Southern Arkansas 82-73. Chelsea Apke had 30 points, including the game-winning bucket with 12 seconds left, as Washington and Jefferson edged Carnegie Mellon 87-86.

Men's recap

Mary Hardin-Baylor is done with its non-conference slate on November 30.

Aaron Walton-Moss scored 40 points as Cabrini defeated Widener 111-99 in a battle of unbeaten Middle Atlantic teams. Moss has 73 points in his last two games and the Cavaliers scored the most points in a single game since a 129-112 loss nearly eight years ago.

No. 20 UW-Platteville shot 45 percent from the field, but Buena Vista shot 86 percent from three as the Beavers dumped the Pioneers 98-80. Buena Vista's bench scored 40 points, led by Nick Clark's 20 and Grady Gallagher's 10.

Hampden-Sydney's Khobi Williamson scored at the buzzer against Springfield to send the Tigers to overtime where they beat the Pride, 89-82. Hampden-Sydney got 20 points from Williamson and 20 more from Mitch Owens. Patrick O'Connor drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift Washington and Lee past Roanoke 87-84 in overtime.

Beloit's Steve McAfee scored 48 points, but it was against Grinnell so it wasn't enough to prevent the Pioneers' 128-120 victory. Grinnell is 5-0, 2-0 in Midwest Conference play.
