There's no place like home, but No. 1 UW-Stevens Point and No. 6 Amherst are pretty good on the road, too.
The top-ranked Pointers fell behind UW-Platteville early in the second half and then fought back to take the lead 49-47. The Pioneers hung with the Pointers until Stevens Point used a 13-0 run to pull away late in the game.
Tyler Tillema made only four field goals, but he was 16-for-20 from the free throw line. Clayton Heuer added 13 points and seven rebounds for Stevens Point. Chas Cross had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Platteville.
Stevens Point also gained a game on No. 7 UW-Whitewater in the WIAC title chase. The Warhawks lost at UW-La Crosse, 88-83. Calahan Skogman scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Trent Schmidt added 22 off the bench for the Eagles.
No. 6 Amherst beat No. 9 Williams 82-70 in Williamstown to sweep the regular season series from its archrival. Tom Killian and David Kalema combined for 38 points and played all but four minutes for the Lord Jeffs. Michael Mayer had 24 points for the Ephs, which have dropped seven straight to Amherst.
Randolph-Macon topped No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan 78-62 for its seventh conference win. The Yellow Jackets held a double-digit lead for most of the second half behind Andre Simon's 23 points. You can read more about Simon in this week's Around the Region column.
Guilford remains tied with the Yellow Jackets for first place in the ODAC after the Quakers edged Hampden-Sydney 74-72.
No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan and No. 13 Augustana remained tied for first place in the CCIW. The Titans held off North Central (Ill.) 72-57 while the Vikings beat Millikin by the same score.
Sam Longwell scored a career-high 31 points as WPI as the Engineers eased past crosstown rival Clark, 81-69. No. 3 Cabrini blasted Neumann 94-68 and the Cavaliers' top three scorers combined for more than the Knights as a team.
Outside the Top 25, Elizabethtown edged Stevenson 65-63 on a Phil Wenger three-pointer with three seconds left. His shot capped a zany final minute in which the lead changed hands four times. Erik Fisher gave the Mustangs the lead 63-62 moments before Wenger hit the game winner.
Franklin and Marshall only got four points from its reserves, but its starters finished one point away from all scoring double-digits, and the Diplomats knocked off Dickinson 67-58. Haverford beat its archrival Swarthmore, 70-59. King's stopped crosstown rival Wilkes, 67-60.
Jamall McDaniel scored four points in the final 15 seconds to lift New Jersey City over Ramapo, 61-60. The Roadrunners had two free throws to tie the game with one second left, but only made one of two.
Moravian edged Merchant Marine 68-65 in overtime, as the Greyhounds scored half their points from the free throw line (34-for-46).
