Babson opened the game red-hot and WPI never quite compensated for it as the Beavers handed the No. 3 Engineers their second consecutive loss on Saturday.
Freshman Joey Flannery scored 20 points and the Beavers opened the game on a 24-4 run en route to the 71-62 victory. Kenny Ross added 13 points and a game-high seven assists as Babson improved to 16-5. Junior Domenick Mastascusa posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Engineers, going 12-for-12 from the free throw line.
Randolph-Macon is streaking in the opposite direction, having won its 13th consecutive game, defeating Lynchburg 84-72. The Yellow Jackets stand atop the ODAC at 11-1, 17-4 overall, and have not lost since a Dec. 18 defeat at Cabrini dropped them to 4-4.
No. 6 Wesley bounced back from its midweek loss, facing a much tougher opponent in Christopher Newport and edging the Captains 66-63. Anthony Bowers scored the final seven points for the Wolverines (18-2, 10-2 CAC), including a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to force CNU (14-7, 6-6) beyond the arc. Mike Cherry scored 24 points for CNU, but missed on the potential game-tying attempt.
Seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater rolled over UW-Superior to secure a resume that could launch it into the top five this week, defeating the Yellowjackets 77-44. The Warhawks hit nine of their first 11 shots from 3-point range on the road.
Salisbury snapped No. 12 Mary Washington's seven-game winning streak, dumping the Eagles (18-3, 11-2 CAC) on their home floor, 81-71. The Sea Gulls (11-10, 6-6) were 14-for-31 from 3-point range, including Dominic Milburn's 5-for-11. He finished with a game-high 27 points, while Tim Harwood added 19.
Trent Batson had a putback dunk at the buzzer to lift No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan to a 65-63 win, avoiding the upset on the road at Randolph. It was Batson's 11th rebound of the game, while DJ Woodmore had 19 points and 11 boards of his own for the Marline (16-5, 9-3).
No. 15 Brockport State bounced back from its Friday night loss to Plattsburgh State in defeating Potsdam State 88-60. John Ivy threw in another 20 points for the Golden Eagles, who are 17-2, 11-1 SUNYAC.
Albertus Magnus and St. Thomas, who have the two longest home-court winning streaks in NCAA men's basketball, extended them to 35 and 31 games, respectively, against overmatched opponents. No. 19 Albertus Magnus defeated 4-16 Mount Ida 88-52 behind Victor Ljuljdjuraj's 26 points and 11 rebounds. Zach Riedeman had 15 points and eight rebounds in only 21 minutes in the No. 14 Tommies' 92-59 defeat of St. Mary's (Minn.). The Cardinals fell to 3-19.
Michael Mayberger led six scorers in double figures with 15 points as fifth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan held off Elmhurst 80-68. IWU led by as many as 22 points in the second half before Elmhurst went on a 19-5 run to get back into the game.
Nick Sienkiewicz knocked down a game-winning 3-pointer from the left wing with two seconds left to lift Springfield to a 73-72 victory over Wheaton (Mass.). Springfield is tied with Babson, one game behind WPI in the race for home floor in the NEWMAC tournament.
Scranton started the second half on a 10-0 run to rally past Susquehanna 77-73 for its eighth consecutive win. Brendan Boken led the Royals (18-3, 8-2 Landmark) with 20 points and nine rebounds. Scranton is tied for first in the conference with Catholic, which won 65-60 at Drew behind 25 points from Corey Stanford. The two face off in D.C. next Saturday.
Maryville (Tenn.) won its 10th consecutive game as Spencer Shoffner and Jaumonee Byrd scored 21 apiece and Oscar Butler and Christian Ford each added 15 in an 89-78 win vs. LaGrange. Maryville is unbeaten at 10-0 in the USA South and is 14-6 overall.
Matthew Medell scored a career-high 24 points as UT-Dallas extended its best start in program history with a 72-67 road win over Louisiana College. The Comets have won 14 of 15 and are 19-2 overall. At 17-1 in the ASC, UT-Dallas is three games ahead of second-place Hardin-Simmons with four games remaining. Ken DeWeese won his 300th game as Mary Hardin-Baylor rolled over East Texas Baptist 87-61. DeWeese also won several hundred games as a junior college coach before coming to UMHB.
Rose-Hulman's Julian Strickland scored a career-high 41 points to help lift the Fightin' Engineers past Manchester 85-65. RHIT maintains a one-game lead in the race for HCAC home-court advantage with four contests remaining.
Victor Smith had 22 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots to lift Rhode Island College to a 75-70 overtime win vs. Keene State. The Anchormen remain two games behind Eastern Connecticut, which improved to 16-5, 10-0 in the Little East with a 71-58 win at Mass-Boston.
Keith Burgess hit two free throws with one second to go to force overtime, where his Pitt-Bradford Panthers edged La Roche 68-67. UPB remained in a tie for third in the AMCC behind Hilbert.
Castleton State had seven players in double figures, as the System team had nobody with more than 22 minutes of game time and outrebounded Green Mountain 68-44 in a 137-97 win. Castleton is 14-7, 12-2, in the NAC. The Spartans are a game back of Husson, which improved to 19-2, 13-1 in winning at Colby-Sawyer.
