Guilford got knocked off, UW-Oshkosh handed UW-La Crosse its first loss and two CCIW teams won in overtime on Saturday, Jan. 4, the first full day of Division III men's basketball play in 2020.
Just five days after Guilford knocked off No. 2 Emory at the buzzer, conference rival Hampden-Sydney turned the tables on the No. 21 Quakers, as the Tigers, coached by Guilford grad Caleb Kimbrough, won a tightly played contest which saw nine ties and eight lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points. Two free throws by Jaylen Gore tied the score at 50-50 with 89 seconds left in regulation, but 12 seconds later Jake Hahn's layup put Hampden-Sydney ahead for good.
Gore's 3-pointer at the other end rimmed out, Hampden-Sydney's Ryan Clements secured the rebound and was quickly fouled. He missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity and Guilford's Liam Ward cleared the rebound. Tyler Dearman had two shots sandwiched around a Ward offensive board in Guilford's next possession, but neither fell and Hahn rebounded the second miss for Hampden-Sydney. Forced to foul, Guilford sent Turner to the line where his two free throws iced the game. Hampden-Sydney improved to 7-5, 2-1 in the ODAC, while Guilford fell to 10-3, 2-2.
Four UW-Oshkosh players scored in double figures as the Titans handed No. 15 UW-La Crosse its first loss of the season. Will Mahoney scored a game-high 21 points and Jack Flynn added 20 for Oshkosh. The Titans, the defending national champions, improved to 7-5, winning their WIAC opener, 79-63.

UW-La Crosse cut the lead to 53-47 early in the second half, but the Titans scored the next eight points, including back-to-back buckets by Flynn, to put the game out of reach. UW-Oshkosh led by at least 12 points the rest of the way. The Eagles fell to 10-1, 0-1 WIAC.
Springfield led No. 4 Middlebury midway through the second half before the Panthers went on a 12-3 run to take a 68-61 lead with 5:14 left. Middlebury (12-0) led by as many as 10 in the closing minute before Springfield (9-2) made it interesting. Heath Post scored three from the stripe and later drilled a contested three to trim to it a 73-71 game with 14 seconds left. After the Panthers missed their second front end of a 1-and-1 in the final 20 seconds, Springfield had a possession to win or send the game to overtime, but Jake Ross was unable to convert a tough finish in the lane, and Middlebury added a free throw and knocked down a last-second heave to escape with the win.
Derek Dotlich connected on a 40-footer at the buzzer to lead No. 16 Elmhurst to an 82-81 road win in double overtime at Carroll. The back-and-forth affair featured 12 ties and 23 lead changes. The Bluejays (11-1, 2-1 CCIW) fouled Tarren Hall with five seconds left. Hall went to the line and hit the first free throw to give Carroll (9-4, 2-2) an 81-79 lead. He missed the second with the Bluejays collecting the rebound and giving the ball to Dotlich. Dotlich dribbled across midcourt and let a 40-footer fly just before the buzzer. His heave went straight through the net.
Connor Raridon scored 18 of his teams' final 22 points, 13 of them from the foul line, to help No. 25 North Central (Ill.) rally past Wheaton 74-71 in CCIW play on Saturday night. Raridon, who played all 45 minutes, finished with 36 points and a team-high six assists. Tyson Cruickshank and Luke Anthony led Wheaton with 17 points apiece. North Central improved to 10-3, 3-1 in conference play, while Wheaton fell to 9-4, 3-1. The loss by Wheaton means that every CCIW team has at least one conference loss this season.
York (Pa.) suffered its second consecutive loss as Albertus Magnus edged the Spartans 76-73 in York's tournament. The Spartans had a three in the air at the horn but the shot was just a touch long. The Spartans last two losses have come to teams that are a combined 19-2. Albertus Magnus has now won 10 straight after a loss to Lynchburg to open its season.
Cortland poured in 20 3-pointers and Brendan Fitzpatrick added 12 assists as the Red Dragons (7-2) roared past Cabrini 102-62. Ryan Schmadel connected on six of his 12 attempted 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 18 points, while Austin Grunder scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 23 rebounds. Voshon Mack scored a game-high 22 points to lead Cabrini (3-9).
