Through Thursday, 198 women's teams have played at least one game, along with 194 men's teams.
Transylvania let a 10-point lead slip away in the last five minutes of regulation, giving up four 3-pointers to Hanover over that span, but the Pioneers (6-6) put the game away in overtime. Lucas Gentry scored the first nine points of the extra session and Hanover went ice cold, missing four consecutive free throws and four consecutive field goal attempts as Transylvania went on to win 89-84. Gentry finished with a game-high 42 points, shooting 16-for-24 from the floor and 7-for-10 from beyond the arc in the victotry.
DeSales dominated Wilkes in its opener, downing its MAC Freedom rival 99-55. Timmy Edwards scored a game-high 31 points, shooting 13-for-18 from the floor, and the Bulldogs outrebounded the Colonels 39-20. Arcadia, Lycoming, Widener and Lebanon Valley were winners in men's action in the two MAC leagues, while Messiah, Albright, Widener, DeSales, Arcadia and Lycoming were MAC winners in women's action.
Mike DeWitt picked up his first win of the season, and it was a milestone victory as well, as he reached the 400-win mark in Ohio Wesleyan's 50-45 win against Denison. The Battling Bishops pulled away in a low-scoring battle, turning a 38-36 lead into a 48-41 bulge with 2:23 left. That's when Will Hunter drove for a layup and took a steal to the hole for a basket to cut the lead to three. But Curtis White hit his free throws with 18 seconds left and Grant Spicer rebounded a missed 3-pointer to secure the win. Jack Clement led OWU (1-2) with 22 points.
It was a big night at Bethel, where the Royals rallied from a 21-point deficit with 12:45 left to force overtime, then went on to defeat Augsburg 85-79. Noah Whalen and Isaiah Rollins combined for 23 second-half points and the Royals got all of their points in the overtime from Isaiah Carver-Bagley (seven) and Jaren Tschetter (six). Carver-Bagley finished with a game-high 23 points, including eight 3-pointers. Matt Carik scored 21 to lead Augsburg.
Washington & Lee got on the floor for the first time after a handful of cancelations and got 22 points and 10 rebounds from Curtis Mitchell, but it was not enough as Kasey Draper poured in 31 for Roanoke to lead the Maroons to a 78-68 win. Tripp Greene added 18 points, 12 of them on four 3-pointers, as Roanoke improved to 6-1, 5-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conerence. Vermont saw its first Division III basketball game of the season, as Northern Vermont-Lyndon beat Northern Vermont-Johnson 92-85. Peyton Olsen scored a game-high 25 points and shot 9-for-11 from the floor in the victory. And Carroll made sure that Elmhurst's long-awaited season debut ended in disappointment, as the Pioneers blocked a last-second shot attempt and held on to defeat the Bluejays 72-70.
