Washington U. found Wiegand Gymnasium to be less than hospitable on Friday night as Carnegie Mellon knocked off the No. 3 Bears in overtime, 71-68. The Tartans, playing in Wiegand temporarily while a new facility is being built to replace 98-year-old Skibo Gymnasium, held Wash U to 4-for-25 shooting from 3-point range.
The Tartans led by as many as 13 points in the second half before the Bears slowly cut into the deficit to take a one-point lead with 3:33 to play. A driving layup by Jack Stone gave the Tartans back the led and R.J. Holmes scored with another layup to go up by three. The Bears hit back-to-back jump shots in the paint to retake the lead with 54 seconds left but junior Sean Oberman converted one of two free throws two possessions later to tie the score before he came up with a steal at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. The lead switched hands nine times in the overtime period with the Tartans prevailing on a layup by Oberman and two free throws by junior Josh Berry with six seconds left.
Jack Nolan shot just 7-for-21 from the floor and 1-for-10 from 3-point range. Wash U fell to 14-2, 4-1 in the UAA, while CMU improved to 9-6, 3-2.
The University of Rochester women knocked NYU from the ranks of the unbeaten on Friday night, as Alexis Sestric scored 16 and Hannah Lindemuth added 13 in a 57-53 home win against the Violets. Rochester (12-5, 4-2 UAA) shot just 2-for-15 from 3-point range. Jordan Janowski scored 20 points on 9-for-19 shooting, but the rest of the Violets went 12-for-50 (24%) from the floor. NYU fell to 14-1, 5-1. Sestric scored 10 of her 16 in the fourth quarter as the Yellowjackets rallied for the win.
In other men's action, Grant Robinson scored 14 points and added a game-high 12 assists as Amherst knocked off Wesleyan in overtime 83-81. The win allowed Amherst to salvage a split in four games against their fellow Little Three rivals, with one win and one loss apiece in games against current No. 14 Williams and No. 20 Wesleyan. Wesleyan was a perfect 2-for-2 from the floor in overtime, but turned the ball over four times in five minutes. Amherst improved to 12-6.
In other women's action, Salisbury missed its first 10 shots of the game but rallied to defeat Eastern 71-53 in a game moved up to avoid the winter storm. Kaylee Otlowski led the Sea Gulls (14-4) with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Abby Wilkinson added 10 points and Emily Dilger and Tori Rumbaugh scored nine apiece in the win.
