Waleed Farid, head coach of the Ithaca College men's basketball program for the past four seasons, has announced that he will be leaving South Hill to assume the same role at New York University. NYU is coming off a 29-2 season and a national runner-up finish.
He replaces Dave Klatsky, who left NYU in April to take an assistant coaching job at the University of Florida.
"I am thrilled to welcome Waleed Farid and his family back to New York City," said NYU athletic director Jake Olkkola. "Waleed is a seasoned head coach who knows what holistic success looks like. His commitment to student-athlete development both on and off the court aligns perfectly with our values at NYU. We are thrilled to have him lead our program into the future."
"I would like to thank coach Farid for his time at Ithaca College," said Ithaca athletic director Susan Bassett. "Waleed transformed the culture and guided our men's basketball program to a championship in just a few seasons. We wish him the best of luck at NYU."
Farid came to Ithaca in 2021 after a five-year stint at Hartwick College. During his time on South Hill, Farid guided the Bombers to an overall record of 66-40, which included a Liberty League crown this past winter and a trip to the second round of the Division III NCAA Tournament. It was Ithaca's first Liberty League title and NCAA appearance since 2019-20.
"It's incredibly bittersweet to step away from Ithaca College, a place that has meant so much to me over the past four years," said Farid. "I want to thank Susan Bassett for giving me the opportunity to lead this program. I am incredibly grateful to our players, their families, my coaching staff and the rest of the Bomber community for their trust, support, and belief in our program. While I'm excited to take on this new opportunity at NYU, Ithaca will always hold a special place in my heart. I leave with lasting memories, lifelong relationships, and tremendous pride in what we've accomplished together."
Prior to his time at Ithaca, Farid spent five seasons as the head coach at Hartwick. His teams won 49 games during that span, including a 16-9 mark in his first season (2016-17). Off the court, Hartwick achieved tremendous success in the classroom, earning the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for the first time in school history in 2019-20.
Farid owns a career coaching mark of 115-92.
A 2008 Stevens graduate with a bachelor's degree in business and technology, Farid played for the Ducks and helped lead the squad to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and to the program's first-ever ECAC Metro title in 2008. He graduated as the program's career leader in points, rebounds and steals, and still sits top-10 in several career categories.
A three-time all-conference selection, Farid earned NABC All-Atlantic District and All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association honors in 2006-07 and 2007-08. He was named D3hoops.com All-Region in 2007. Farid went on to serve as an assistant coach at his alma mater for seven years, helping the Ducks to a 127-67 record, an ECAC Metro Championship in 2011, and an at-large berth into the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
