Choctaws Escape With 85-80 Victory Over Schreiner

CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College men's basketball held off a furious charge from Schreiner University to pick up an 85-80 win on Monday night in A.E. Wood Coliseum.  The game was delayed 48 minutes due to a tornado warning in Hinds County.

The Choctaws led by as many as 18 points with 9:10 remaining as sophomore Cameron Bounds put in an offensive rebound just after the two teams came back from the delay.  Bounds tallied his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mountaineers would slowly work their way back into the game led by point guard Darren Smith, who scored 21 points, inlcuding making five three-pointers, four of which came in the final nine minutes of the game.

Schreiner had a chance to tie the game with :43 seconds remaining when Dermon Smith missed the second of two free throws and junior Pierre Hadley pulled down the defensive board.

Junior Greg Pulliam would knock down four free throws over the final :22 seconds to seal the win for MC.

Senior Ken Black led the Choctaws with 18 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor, while Pulliam chipped in 10 points.

The Mountaineers were paced by Smith's 21 points, but had two other players in double-figures with Tyrie Prince (15 pts.) and Mitch Lawrence (12 pts.).

The Choctaws outrebounded the Mountaineers, 47-28, and shot 55% (16-29) from the floor.  Schreiner shot 56% (18-32) in the second half as they made their comeback.

The Choctaws will hit the road for the first time this season as they make their longest trip of the year to Alpine, TX to face Sul Ross State University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
