La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team set a school and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record with 19 three-point field goals in its 89-69 victory over UW-Stout Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC while the Blue Devils fall to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The 19 three-pointers breaks the school record of 16 set versus Marycrest International, Iowa (Jan. 3, 2000) and UW-Oshkosh (Jan. 12, 1991). UW-L also set a school record with 40 three-point attempts, breaking the record of 35 against UW-Whitewater (Feb. 15, 1991).
The conference record for three-point field goals made was 18 set by UW-Stevens Point versus Carroll University, Wis. (Nov. 17, 2007). The WIAC record for three-point attempts is 42 set by UW-Whitewater versus UW-Oshkosh (Feb. 1, 1995). The Eagles' 40 attempts is second-most.
UW-L and UW-Stout were tied at 13-13 with 13:06 left in the first half Wednesday night when the Eagles went on a 14-2 run to lead 27-15 with 8:14 remaining. Michael Hanson had a pair of three-pointers in the run while Jeff Heiden and Luke Tweed each had one.
The Eagles led 36-19 with 3:09 left and 41-28 at halftime.
UW-Stout cut the lead to 44-37 with 17:28 remaining, but UW-L used a 15-4 run to lead 59-41. The Blue Devils could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the game.
Tony Mane led UW-L with 37 points, tying his career-high. He also scored 37 at UW-Stevens Point in the 2008 WIAC Tournament Quarterfinals (Feb. 25). Mane was 11-of-24 from the field Wednesday, including seven-of-12 from three-point range, and hit all eight of his free throws. With his seven three-point field goals, Mane became UW-L's career leader in three-point field goals made with 214. He breaks the record of 212 set by Chris Fehrenbach (2004-08). Mane scored 29 points in the second half Wednesday.
Tweed scored a career-high 15 points for the Eagles, finishing five-of-15 from three-point range. Heiden finished with 12 points and seven assists while Hanson added nine points. Jordan Rumpel finished with a game-high 11 rebounds while also recording five assists.
UW-L shot 45.5% from the field, including 47.5% (19-of-40) from three-point range, and 58.8% (10-of-17) at the free throw line.
Eric Hostetter led UW-Stout with 15 points while Erik Olson finished with 13, Jerrod Buchholtz 11 and Mahlon Thomas 10. The Blue Devils shot 37.7% from the field, including 34.8% (eight-of-23) from three-point range, and 60.0% (15-of-25) at the line.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, Dec. 11 hosting UW-Platteville at 3:05 p.m.
