HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (January 20, 2011) – Three players scored in double figures to lead the Centenary men's basketball team to a 64-61 win over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Marywood, Thursday in Hackettstown, N.J. In front of a season-high crowd on "Pack The House" Day, the Cyclones improved to 5-10, 3-5 in the CSAC while the Pacers fell to 6-7, 2-4 in conference play.
Senior Rob Urie (Ortley Beach, N.J./Toms River East) led the way with a game-high 13 points, hitting three of his six three-pointers. He also tallied two assists and two rebounds. Fellow classmate Corey Kearney (North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace) contributed 12 points and six rebounds and junior Ludner Innocent (Asbury Park, N.J./Academy Charter) shot four-of-seven from the floor, including two-of-two from beyond the arc, en route to 11 points.
Centenary's inside attack made its presence felt, as freshmen Gabe Cheavers (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Andy Charles (West Orange, N.J./Montclair) and junior Larry Lenahan (South Amboy, N.J./South Amboy) combined for 15 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks.
Sophomore Warren Murphy (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) finished with eight points, three assists and a team and career-high eight rebounds as Centenary dominated on the glass, grabbing 48 boards to the Pacers' 29. The 19-rebound edge marked a season-best for the Cyclones. CC finished with 18 offensive rebounds which led to a 20-7 advantage in second chance points.
The first three and a half minutes of the game featured two ties and two lead changes before Innocent hit a three pointer to give Centenary a lead it would hold through the period. The Cyclones built their edge to as many as 11, but a late 9-4 run by the Pacers left CC with a six-point advantage, 32-26, at halftime.
MU outscored the Cyclones 14-7 to open the second half and took a one-point lead, 40-39, with 15:33 remaining. A three-point play by Kearney put Centenary ahead, and the team held that edge until a late charge by the Pacers knotted the contest at 59-apiece. But free throws by Murphy and sophomore Max Hughes (Nazareth, Pa./Notre Dame Green Pond) and a jumper by Urie proved to be too much for Marywood as Centenary went on to win by three.
The Cyclones return to action on Saturday, January 22, with a road conference test at Cabrini at 3:00 p.m. Earlier this season, the Cavaliers defeated the Cyclones in Hackettstown, 95-82. Innocent had 16 points and six assists in the loss.
