CHICAGO -- Matt Johnson and Tom Williams combined to score 39 points as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Carnegie Mellon University 86-76 in University Athletic Association play Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Johnson scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half before Williams tallied nine of his 14 points in the second stanza. Both players made four 3-point baskets on the day.

Chicago (7-11 overall, 4-3 UAA) trailed 39-38 after a first period that featured eight lead changes.

The Maroons outscored Carnegie Mellon (5-12, 2-5) 20-5 during the first 6:25 of the second half to take a 58-44 lead.

Carnegie Mellon cut the gap to 75-69 on a Shane Rife three-pointer with 3:28 left in the game, but the Maroons converted nine of 10 free throw opportunities the rest of the way.

Derrick Davis and Sam Gage each added 10 points off the bench as Chicago won its second straight game.

Rife paced the Tartans with 20 points, while Matthew Pettit and Christian Manoli added 17 and 15, respectively.
