More news about: Grinnell

Matt Chalupa '12 scorched the nets for a career-high 24 points to send the Grinnell College men's basketball team to a 110-83 victory over Ripon College Friday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Chalupa drained 8-of-16 shots from 3-point range as Grinnell defeated the second-place team in the Midwest Conference and extended its winning streak to four games. The win also avenged a loss to Ripon in December.

Griffin Lentsch '13 added 17 points for the Pioneers, who are 7-6 in the league and 12-6 in all games, while Matt Skelly '12 added 13 points and Patrick Maher '14 and Dominique Bellamy '13 scored 10 each.

Bellamy also had six rebounds and four steals. Brian McManamy '13 added five of Grinnell's 17 steals and Jack Adams '13 tallied three of Grinnell's seven blocks. Scott Kaitz '11 dished out seven assists.

Taylor Koth scored 22 points for the Red Hawks, who dipped to 9-4 in the MWC and 11-8 overall.

Ripon broke out to a 6-0 lead before the Pioneers reeled off seven straight points, beginning with a trey by Skelly and then baskets by Maher and Kaitz. Grinnell led by three with 8:35 to go in the half before opening things up a bit with an 11-4 run for a 44-34 cushion. Chalupa, Maher and Skelly all had 3-pointers during the spurt and McManamy also had a basket.

Grinnell was ahead 60-47 at halftime and still led by just 12 with 9:11 to go in the game. That's when the Pioneers all but put things away with a critical 8-2 run. Chalupa began the run with a 3-pointer, Lentsch had a basket and Skelly a trey for a 92-74 Grinnell lead with 7:51 remaining.

The Pioneers went ahead by as many as 28 before coasting to the victory.

Grinnell will attempt to keep its good fortune going Saturday when nationally-ranked St. Norbert College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
