ANGOLA, Ind. – It was an up-and-down Wednesday night for Albion College in a 72-68 loss to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Trine University.
Ian Jackson scored three baskets to spark Trine's 12-0 run as the Thunder moved to a 29-16 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. Trine went on to hold a 37-27 lead at halftime.
Trine maintained the 10-point cushion four minutes into the second half, but Alex Harville and J.C. Cruse erased the deficit. Cruse scored three baskets in the paint and Harville knocked down a pair of 3-point shots as Albion pulled even at 48 with 13 minutes to play.
Harville added two more "threes" as Albion pulled in front, 56-50, with 10 ½ to play. Albion led by seven, 68-61, when Chris Hutton scored in the paint with 3:50 left.
Albion failed to score from that point as it missed four shots, committed four turnovers, and missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity at the free throw line.
Trine took advantage as Jackson's "three" tied the score and Tim Pearcy added a layup and a free throw. Jackson led all players with 28 points, connecting on 10-of-18 shots from the field. Pearcy added 15.
Cruse finished with 21 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Harville and Kolin Kazen added 11 points apiece.
Albion returns home at 5 p.m. Saturday to face Kalamazoo College.
