Furious Comeback Falls Short for Mavs

More news about: Medaille

(Pittsburgh, PA) – The Medaille College men's basketball team headed into their final regular season game of the season needing a win to clinch a share of the AMCC title and to host the tournament championship.  Unfortunately that did not happen as a late game comeback effort fell short when AMCC leading La Roche College hung on for a (68-64) victory on Senior Night in Pittsburgh.

It was a game that saw Medaille shoot considerably better than their opponent as the Mavs knocked down (48.9%) of their shots from the floor, compared to (39.3%) for the Redhawks.  Turnovers and second chance points played a critical role in the Mavs loss as they turned the ball over (19) times and allowed (18) second chance points, to just seven of their own.

Senior Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) put forth a tremendous performance as he netted a game high (25) points on (9 of 12) shooting from the floor and six of eight from the charity stripe.  Malicki also pulled down (4) caroms and chipped in with a pair of assists.

Junior point guard Angel Flores (Bronx, NY/Samuel Gompers) dished out (6) assists, grabbed (6) boards and swiped two steals in the losing effort.   Senior Kevin Borden (Fairport, NY/Fairport) knocked down a pair of three pointers en route to a ten point day as well.

The Mavs trailed by (14) points with just (4:35) remaining in the game before they made their run.  Over the next four minutes Medaille would chip away at the La Roche lead and they had a chance to square the game with three seconds left but a layup that bounced in and then out and the ensuing defensive board and foul would put La Roche at the free throw line where they iced the game.

Despite the valiant effort Medaille drops to the #3 seed in the tournament and they will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday (2/22) at 7:00pm against #6 seeded Pitt-Bradford.  The loss snaps a ten game win streak for Medaille and they now stand at (19-5) overall and finish AMCC play at (15-3).
