Colby men's basketball falls in tourney title game

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --- The Colby College men's basketball team fought back from 13 points down with 7:49 to play to cut the margin to three points, but University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth won its own tourney with a 79-74 victory Saturday night.

Colby falls to 1-1 overall heading into Tuesday's home opener at 7 p.m. against University of Maine at Farmington.
Chris Hudnut had game-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds for the Mules. He is averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds after two games.
UMass-Dartmouth (2-0 overall) led 65-52 when Alex Rodrigues had an inside basket with 7:49 to play. The Mules, though, went on a 10-0 run and only trailed 65-62 after Sam Willson hit a layup with 5:25 to go.
Colby got as closed as three points on four occasions the rest of the way. Hudnut hit a layup with 55 seconds to play to make it a 75-72 margin, but Jake Laga sank two free throws with 37 seconds remaining for a five-point margin. Hudnut added another basket with three seconds left to make it a three-point margin only to see Ryan Walsh hit two free throws for the final points with one second to play.
The Mules had a rough start to the game, falling behind 14-5 just 4:05 into the contest. UMass-Dartmouth opened up a lead of 13 points at 28-15 and led 40-29 at intermission.
Luke Westman finished with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added three assists and two blocked shots for Colby. Patrick Stewart added 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting and ripped down eight rebounds. Ryan Jann scored nine points and had seven rebounds, while Willson had seven points and six rebounds.
Walsh led the Corsairs with 18 points and Laga finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
The Mules had a 46-30 rebounding advantage in the game, but the Corsairs had just 10 turnovers to Colby's 19. Both teams shot about 44 percent from the field.
