CASTINE, Maine -- Maine-Machias saw all of its starters reach double figures in an 84-57 win over Maine Maritime Friday in a non-conference men's basketball game. The Clippers improved to 4-2, while the Mariners dropped to 0-4.
Aaron Van Buren, Elias Gutierrez and Brian Getchell each scored 15 points for Machias and AC Ford and Floyd Higgins added 12 each. Higgins pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and Ford dished out a game-high nine assists.
Jason Hatch paced Maine Maritime with 13 points. Tyler Chiasson added nine and Dylan Price eight. Logan Poirier grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
The Mariners led by four, 9-5, five minutes into the game when Hatch connected from long distance. Van Buren answered with a trey to put the Clippers within one, 9-8. Maine Maritime took an 11-8 lead after a pair of Chiasson free throws but Machias evened the game with an Elvis Nunez layup and Gutierrez' free throw.
The Mariners took a two-point lead, 14-12, after Price drained a three, and led 18-14 after Garrett Libby's jumper at 10:31. Ford tied the game with a jumper at 9:15, 20-20, and the Clippers never trailed again as they went into the break ahead 39-31.
Maine Maritime got as close as six, 42-36 on a pair of Hatch free throws with 18:40 left in the game. A Van Buren free throw gave the Clippers a 59-39 lead with 15 minutes left and Machias led by as much as 28, 82-54, on a Van Buren jumper.
The Mariners open North Atlantic Conference play Tuesday, Dec. 3, 5:30 p.m., hosting Maine-Farmington.
