RICHARDSON, TX (03.04.14) - UT Dallas senior forward Kyle Schleigh has been named the American Southwest Conference Player of the Year as he led three Comets as All-ASC selections, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. In addition, UTD head coach Terry Butterfield was named ASC Coach of the Year.
Schleigh was one of five players named the ASC First Team and was also named the league's All-Defensive Team. Junior guard Matthew Medell was tabbed second team All-ASC and junior guard Nolan Harvey earned third team All-ASC honors.
A native of Houston, Schleigh became the first three-time first team all-conference selection in program history after averaging 17.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a senior. He was a three-time ASC Player of the Week this season, giving him 13 such honors during his career, while ranking in the top seven in the ASC in five different statistical categories. He was a first team All-ASC pick and All-ASC honoree the past two seasons and was named to the ASC East All-Freshman Team in 2011. The ASC East's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year as a junior, Schleigh ranks sixth all-time in the ASC in scoring (1,715 points) and fourth in rebounding (877 rebounds). He is the program's all-time leader in points, rebounds, steals and blocked shots while ranking second all-time in assists.
Medell, a native of San Antonio, picked up his first All-ASC certificate of his career, earning a spot on the league's second team. Medell was second on the squad in scoring behind Schleigh with 15.5 points per game while adding 4.3 rebounds and shooting a team-best 55.7 percent from the field. He was named ASC East Freshman of the Year in 2012.
Harvey, a native of Friendswood, also earned his first all-conference recognition, being placed on the league's third team. Harvey is averaging 13.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while shooting a team-high 45.2 percent from three-point range.
Butterfield collected his fourth conference Coach of the Year honor, earning ASC East recognition in 2004, 2011 and 2012. He is in his 14th season at the helm of the program and boasts a 238-141 record with the Comets.
The Comets (25-3) won the ASC for the third time in program history and are set host the opening two rounds of the NCAA Division III National Tournament this weekend. UTD is making its fifth appearance in the national tournament.
