IRVINE — Erin Matsumoto and Midori McElwee each scored 18 points as the Occidental women's basketball team took NCAA Division I UC Irvine to overtime before falling 87-76 on the road in an exhibition loss on Tuesday.
The Tigers had a shot to win at the end of regulation, but Matsumoto, who was 5 of 10 from the field and 3 of 4 from the three-point line, missed a two-pointer to win it with 2 seconds left and the scored tied at 71-71.
Ciara Byrne sunk a pair of free throws to tie the game with 1:20 left and neither team was able to take the lead.
Byrne and Mackenzie Bretz each had nine points. Byrne led Oxy with seven rebounds and Dru Ishibashi had seven points, four rebounds and three assists. Kendahl Wallis-Lang had seven points and Triana Anderson had six off of the bench.
UC Irvine had five scorers in double figures, led by 16 points from reserve Jenny Dee.
UC Irvine took control in overtime with a 7-2 run to start the period.
Oxy opens the regular season against UC Santa Cruz at home on Nov. 15.
The Tigers begin SCIAC competition on Dec. 18 at Cal Lutheran.
