PORTLAND, Ore. -- In a game that remained tight through the first 10 minutes, Lewis & Clark extended a one-point lead to 23 by halftime as the Pioneers beat the Valley Forge Patriots 94-65 to open the season on Friday evening at Pamplin Sports Center.
The match-up was the second of the Bon Appetit NWC Tipoff Classic where Linfield won over Johnson & Wales 80-74 in the opener.
Lewis & Clark was led by 24 points from Jason Luhnow, who missed three shots on 13 attempts in the game. He was 4 of 6 from 3-point range, neary snagging a double-double with nine rebounds. Luhnow, who led the Northwest Conference last season in total assists, finished with six assists against Valley Forge and also had three steals.
The Pios broke the game open with a 17-5 run over a three-minute span in the middle of the opening half. The largest lead of the game was 33 points for Lewis & Clark, which never led by less than 20 points the entire second half.
"It felt good to be out there again," said Luhnow. "We started a little slow and had some first-game nerves, but to be able to go out and have everyone contribute like they did is a great sign for this team."
Overall, the Pios put four players into double figures as Cannen Roberson added 16 points and the freshmen pair of Adrian Romero and Kupa'a Harrison (pictured right) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. The two scored 18 of Lewis & Clark's final 20 points.
Roberson finished with eight rebounds, while junior transfer Markel Leonard had eight points and seven assists in his Pioneers debut.
Valley Forge was led by 12 points from Sean Word.
Lewis & Clark made 51 percent of its shots in the game, including a 15 of 30 performance from 3-point range. The Pios also made 7 of 13 from the free-throw line. As the nation's leading team in rebounding margin last season, Lewis & Clark began this season plus-12, controlling a 41-29 rebounding edge despite not playing with All-NWC second-teamer Carl Appleton, who plays his final game with the football team on Saturday.
The Pioneers did commit 14 second half turnovers after only six in the first half. Still, Lewis & Clark held a 26-19 edge in points off turnovers and a 17-2 advantage in second chance points.
Lewis & Clark plays Johnson & Wales on Saturday night to close out the tournament at 8 p.m. Linfield matches up with Valley Forge at 4 p.m. for each team's final game of the event.
