DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Hood College closed the game on a 11-2 run in the final five minutes, but 16th-ranked Mount Union held on for a 65-63 win in the Land of Magic Classic.
Daniel Wegener (Falling Waters, W.Va. / Broadfording Christian (Md.)) led the Blazers with 13 points and seven rebounds. Ian Eversull (Ijamsville, Md. / Urbana) was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range for 12 points - all in the first half. Tanner Ruths (Stephens City, Va. / Sherando) and Michael Robinson(Upper Marlboro, Md. / Pallotti) each scored 10 points, while Robinson added four steals. Davon Hill (Clinton, Md./ Potomac School) had five assists, becoming the fifth player in Hood history with 200 career assists.
The Blazers went 6-of-12 on 3-point field goals and shot 47 percent in the contest. They held the Purple Raiders nearly 20 points under their season average of 84.1 points per game.
Hood went 11-of-19 at the free throw line, while Mount Union did not attempt a foul shot in the contest.
A jumper by Cody Dillon gave the Purple Raiders a 63-52 edge with five minutes to play. From there, however, the Blazers held Mount Union to 1-of-7 shooting with five turnovers. Wegener scored down low with a minute left to cut it to 65-61 and Ruths stole the ball on the Purple Raiders' next possession. The reserve guard fed Jared Ruiz (Frederick, Md. / Oakdale) on the break as the Blazers pulled within 65-63 with 54 seconds to play.
After Mount Union missed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining, Wegener cleared the glass to regain possession. The freshman grabbed an offensive board with 17 seconds left to give Hood a final chance, but the Blazers turned it over with one second on the clock.
Hood held an early 8-3 lead behind two Eversull threes to open the game. The Purple Raiders came back and led by as many as eight points during the first half, but a bucket by Ruths with five seconds on the clock gave Hood a 38-37 edge at the break.
With the score tied 42-42, Robinson scored five straight points to give the Blazers a 47-42 lead with 15:42 left. The Purple Raiders responded with a 19-3 run to take the lead.
Kyle Scelza came off the bench to go 6-of-12 from 3-point range for 18 points. He led a perimeter attack that went 13-of-34 (38 percent) in the contest. Jarrett Ruffin had 11 points and nine rebounds, including Mount Union's only points in the final five minutes, which proved to be the difference.
Hood, now 7-4 on the season, will face St. Scholastica on December 29 at 7 p.m. to wrap up action in the Land of Magic Classic.
