Record-breaking 1st half sends Grinnell men's basketball team to win over Providence-Manitoba

GRINNELL, Iowa - The Grinnell College men's basketball team shattered one school record and was close to two others as the Pioneers disposed of Providence University College of Manitoba, Canada, 172-95 Sunday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell established a new school mark for points in a half by erupting for 95 in the opening 20 minutes, breaking the previous best of 94 on Nov. 20, 2012. Grinnell made 66 field goals in the game, just two shy of the school record, and the overall point total is fourth-best in program history.

Hannes Kogelnik '21 led a charge of five Pioneers in double-digit scoring with 40 points, two off his career high. Patrick Simms '22 added 31 points, Jackson Qualley '22 tied a career high with 28, Zachary Stice '21 had a career-best 22 and Jake Benhart '22 poured in 13.

Kogelnik made seven of Grinnell's 23 treys, while Stice hit six. Will Dubow '21 tied a career high with nine rebounds and also had three steals. Kogelnik tied his career high with four steals and Qualley, Simms and Morgan Walser '21 had three each. Kogelnik tied a career high with his total and Walser established a new best. Simms tied his career high with five assists, a total matched by Tyler Grumhaus '21.

Grinnell added 27 steals while improving to 2-3 on the season. The Pilots dipped to 2-5.

The Pioneers never trailed, shooting out to a 6-0 lead on a free throw by Qualley, 3-pointer by Stice and Kogelnik a layup. Grinnell continued to cruise, opening up a 95-47 lead by halftime. Kogelnik started the second half with a 3-pointer and Simms a layup to push the lead over 50, and Grinnell sailed from there.

The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday when Westminster College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. test.
