Rock Island, Ill. – The 15th-ranked Wheaton men's basketball team extended its win streak to four games on Wednesday night with a 74-63 victory at Augustana College (9-12, 4-8). Wheaton improves to 17-4 on the season and 9-3 in CCIW play.
The Thunder backcourt Nyameye Adom and Tyson Cruickshank combined to score 48 of Wheaton's 74 points tonight in the Quad Cities. Cruickshank scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. The guard distributed three assists with two steals. Adom scored 22 points, making four three-pointers. The All-American grabbed six rebounds with a team-high four assists and two steals.
Cade Alioth scored six points and he tied for the team lead with six rebounds, and added three assists. Alioth's six boards tonight moves him past the 677 career rebounds by Nate Haynes (2010-14), as the Thunder senior moved into 10th place on Wheaton's all-time rebounding list with 680 career rebounds. Luke Anthony made a pair of three-pointers to score six points, with five rebounds and three assists.
The Thunder shot 47.9% (23-of-48) from the field, including 48% (12-of-25) behind the three-point arc. The Vikings posted a 46.3% (25-of-54) field goal percentage, with a 25% (5-of-20) effort from three-point range. Wheaton shot 76.2% (16-of-21) at the free throw line and the Vikings had a 66.7% (8-of-12) effort at the charity stripe. Augustana held a 28-22 rebounding edge, including a 7-3 advantage on the offensive glass for the hosts.
Luke Johnson led Augustana with 13 points, with four assists. Dan Carr scored 12 points with eight rebounds, as Nicolas Gilberto also collected eight boards for the Vikings. Matt Hawkins and Matt Hanushewsky each scored 10 points for the hosts.
Augustana held a narrow lead for much of the first 10 minutes of the game tonight. Cruickshank made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 17-17 with 10:03 left in the first half, and he had a layup on Wheaton's next possession to give Wheaton its first lead of the night at 19-17 with 9:35 left before halftime.
Adom made a three-pointer with 1:54 left in the first half to give Wheaton a 37-33 lead. Augustana responded following the trifecta by scoring the final six points of the half to give the hosts a 39-37 lead at halftime.
Cruickshank led all players with 18 first half points. Adom had eight points in the opening period. Hawkins led Augustana with eight points in the first half, while Carr and Johnson each scored seven points apiece.
The first 12 minutes of the second half were tightly contested. Hamilton made a layup with 7:30 remaining in regulation to tie the game at 56-56. Wheaton responded with a 12-3 run to take a 68-59 lead with 1:47 remaining in the game. A key sequence in the Thunder run occurred at 2:48 when Nick Schiavello made a three-pointer to improve Wheaton's lead from 62-59 to 65-59. A few Thunder possessions later, Adom made his fourth three-pointer of the night to give Wheaton a nine-point lead at 68-59 with 1:47 remaining in the game. Wheaton was six-of-six at the free throw line in the final 1:20 of the game to secure the 11-point win.
Adom led Wheaton in second half with 14 points, two assists and two steals. Cruickshank scored eight points with two assists and two steals.
Wheaton is off until February 9 when Carthage visits King Arena for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
