GRINNELL, Iowa - While the offenses were supposed to be at the forefront of Saturday afternoon's men's basketball game at Darby Gymnasium, it was Grinnell College's defense that stole the show.
The Pioneers limited Greenville University to a season-low point total and just 35 percent shooting from the field in a 125-101 victory over the Panthers at Darby Gymnasium.
Grinnell had 36 assists as a team, its sixth-highest total in program history and the best since a 2021 victory over Spurgeon College.
The contest, which pitted the top two scoring teams at the NCAA Division III level, saw Grinnell shoot a season-best 52.8 percent from the field.
The Pioneers, winners of three straight, were led by Kai Te Huki's 8-of-12 shooting from 3-point land and Sean Murphy's '26 6-of-10 performance from deep. They finished with 36 and 20 points, respectively.
John Vincent '26 added a career-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Others with six boards were Gabe Garcia '27, Sean Walser '26 and Harris Dar '28. Garcia and Mitch Priest '25 had five assists each, with Priest's marking a career-high. Jackson Leone '25 came up with five steals and Te Huki added three.
Grinnell (5-2) fell behind 8-0 right off the bat before inching its way back with the aid of a 15-0 run. Trailing 13-6, Te Huki had a 3-pointer and two layups and Walser a free throw to put the Pioneers on top 14-13. Vincent followed with a bucket, Murphy drained a 3-pointer and Leone scored for a 21-13 lead.
Greenville (2-5) trailed 73-51 at halftime and saw the gap grow to 30 before making one final charge, coming up with 14 with 5:49 left. But Grinnell responded with an 11-point run that included a trey and bucket by Te Huki, two baskets from Vincent and a layup by Nick Lundy '27.
Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Tuesday when Knox College visits Darby. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
