Hope falls after late Franklin run

The Hope College men's basketball team cut an early double-digit deficit down to one point in the second half on Saturday before defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Franklin College pulled away.

Franklin closed with a 16-2 run and earned a 73-58 victory.


The Flying Dutchmen dropped to 1-1 on the season after winning at HCAC runner-up Anderson on Friday.


Junior forward Parker Hovey (Hart, Michigan / Hart) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) also scored 13 points to share the team lead. Freshman guard Brendan Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) added 11 points for his second straight game in double figures.


Franklin (2-0) was led by Justin Harrington's 16 points off the bench.


Hope trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and pulled within 57-56 when junior forward Simon Neuhaus (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) split a pair of free throws with 3:55 remaining.


The Flying Dutchmen committed five turnovers and went 1-for-4 from the field the rest of the way. Franklin made all six of its final field-goal attempts and went 4-for-4 at the free-throw line while committing just two turnovers.


Hope returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. Central at Elmhurst University in Illinois.
