The Hope College men's basketball team capitalized on turnovers by the opposition Friday night as the Flying Dutchmen posted a 71-64 nonconference victory over Ohio Northern University on the Polar Bears' home court in Ada, Ohio.
Hope scored 25 points off of 18 Ohio Northern turnovers in raising its record to 3-2, while the Polar Bears dropped to 4-3 on the season.
The Flying Dutchmen led nearly the entire game, but Ohio Northern stayed within striking distance throughout. A layup by senior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan/Rochester Adams) with 13:49 remaining gave Hope the lead for good at 44-43.
The Dutchmen were clinging to a three-point lead at 65-62 when senior guard Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan/East Lansing) delivered the knockout punch, nailing a 3-point shot – only the second made 3-pointer of the night for Hope - with 59 seconds remaining. Wourman added a layup and free throw in the final seconds to secure the victory.
An early 8-0 run, ignited by several steals by the Flying Dutchmen, propelled Hope to its biggest lead of the night at 20-11 about eight minutes into the game. The Polar Bears responded with a seven-point run of their own to pull back within two. Hope led 35-30 at halftime.
Wourman led the Dutchmen with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan/Hart) had a solid all-around game with 11 points, a team-high five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Eleven different players scored in the game for Hope, as the Flying Dutchmen shot 49 percent from the field (25 of 51). Hope also committed only nine turnovers in the contest.
Hope concludes its two-game weekend swing through the Buckeye State Saturday, December 6 in Delaware, Ohio, against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University. Tip-off time from Branch Rickey Arena is 3 p.m. Eastern time.
