WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Backed by Chase Garito's 22-point effort, the No. 21 ranked Otterbein University men's basketball team won its 11th straight contest, defeating Baldwin Wallace 86-70. With the win, head coach Andy Winters earned his 100th career victory, seeing Otterbein improve to 16-2 overall and 8-1 in the OAC.
Garito led all players on a 10 of 13 effort from the floor, tying his career-high in points. Seniors Troy Scowden and Jarius Jones were tremendous off the bench, adding 19 and 16 points, respectively. Impacting both sides of the ball, the formidable Julian Heckman turned in a stat line of eight points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
From the jump the story was all Otterbein, leading the entirety of the contest. Garito set the tone early, scoring eight of Otterbein's first 10 points. Just over midway through the first half, back to back buckets by Scowden saw the hosts claim a double digit advantage. The lead would continue to build throughout the first half before Carter Piatt-Brown found Garito for a last-second layup to push the Cardinals ahead 47-30 at the break.
Holding all of the momentum in the second half, Otterbein never let BW cut into the lead. Extending the advantage to as many as 23 points, the Cardinals answered off the conference bye week with a big victory.
With Scowden (8 of 10) and Garito leading the charge, the Cardinals shot 57 percent from the floor. The Cardinals scored 64 of their points in the paint, compared to just 36 from the Yellow Jackets.
Winters, the newest member of the 100 club, reached the milestone with 88 of the wins coming at Otterbein. The previous 12 came during the 2015-16 season where he was the interim head coach at Capital.
On Saturday, the Cardinals welcome No. 13 Mount Union for the front half of a men's and women's doubleheader. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
