ALBION, Mich. – Patty Rewa didn't look like she carried any extra pressure after receiving the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week award of her career Monday. Rewa, Albion's junior center, went 8-for-8 from the field in the first half as the Britons built a double-digit lead and never looked back in posting a 66-54 victory over Alma College.
It was the fourth win in a row for the Britons who reached the .500 mark for the first time this season at 8-8. Albion moved into a tie with Hope College for second place in the league standings. The Britons and Flying Dutch will square off Thursday night inside Albion's Kresge Gymnasium.
Albion made 7 of its first 9 shots as it sprinted out to a 13-5 lead 4 minutes into the game. Rewa scored Albion's first 7 points and 9 of the first 13. The margin reached double digits for the first time on Tanner Johnson's basket that made the score 19-8 with 11 minutes to play in the first half. Albion led by as many as 15 in the first half and it settled for a 35-22 lead at halftime.
Alma trimmed the margin to four early in the second half as Albion opened the period by making 2-of-6 shots from the field and turning the ball over four times. The Britons never relinquished the lead as Autumn Haggadone converted a pair of layups. Rewa knocked down a pair of free throws to build the lead back to double digits with 11 minutes remaining and Alma could not get within 9 points the rest of the way.
Rewa finished with a career-high 21 points, going 9-for-11 from the field. She grabbed 13 rebounds to complete her seventh double-double of the season.
de Bear also reached a career scoring high, knocking down 6-of-11 shots for 14 points. Melissa Shaw added 10 points and 7 assists.
Alma's Anna Mattson led all players with 25 points and she grabbed 9 rebounds.
