MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College defeated host Mount Mary College 82-69 tonight in a nonconference game at the Bloechl Center. Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth picked up his 100th career coaching victory with the win.
"You don't do those things without a lot of help from lots of people along the way," Duckworth said. "I've had really great assistant coaches and awesome players along the way.
"All of those guys have really done this and I've just had a chance over 10 years as a head coach to be along for the ride. But it's a special night, and I really appreciate this group getting it done for us."
It was his 35th victory as head coach of the Inferno. He picked up his prior wins as head coach at the State University of New York at New Paltz and Western Technical College (La Crosse, Wis.).
The Inferno took the lead, 5-2, on an Alyssa Jensen (Cudahy, Wis.) 3-pointer and never relinquished it.
Alverno led 45-28 with 2:41 left in the first half, but the Blue Angels closed out the half on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 45-35 at the break.
Just five minutes into the second half Alverno extended the lead up to 19 on a Hannah Galstad (Holmen, Wis.) steal and layup and would keep the lead in double-digits the rest of the game.
Three Inferno players hit double-figures on the night led by Gabby Allen's (Milwaukee/Bay View) 22 points. Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) added 20 and Galstad had 11 on 4-of-6 shooting.
Jensen and Kristen Speerschneider (Luxemburg-Casco/New Franken, Wis.) both just missed out on doubles with nine points apiece and Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) scored eight.
McComb notched her third double-double of the season as she snagged a team-high 13 rebounds, and was an assist shy of a triple-double with nine. Defensively she added five steals and two blocks.
Kontowski grabbed 10 rebounds and Allen added five assists assists.
The Inferno shot just 55 percent (16-of-29) from the free-throw line, their lowest output of the season.
The Inferno still remain perfect against the Blue Angels in the all-time series with an 11-0 advantage.
Next up for Alverno is Northern Athletics Conference foe MSOE on Saturday, as the teams battle it out for the Red Rivalry Cup. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Alverno's Reiman Gymnasium.
