Jessica Duleba scored 15 points (6-10 fg) and Kiara Johnson (5-10 fg) came off the bench to score 14 points to lead the women's basketball team to a 76-55 home victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night in the ARC Arena.
The Bearcats shot 49 percent (33-67) and out-rebounded the visiting Ducks by a 47-34 margin to win on the first official day of the NCAA Division III basketball season.
The Bearcats also used stingy defense to score 24 points off of 21 turnovers by Stevens, while the bench scored 32 points compared to only six by Stevens.
With the exception of two ties in the first half, the women's basketball team led throughout the contest between the 2010-11 champions of the CUNYAC and Empire 8 Conference.
In addition to 15 points, Duleba added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 29 minutes of action. Folashade Akinde had a big all-around night with nine points, five rebounds, six steals and two assists. Jordan Alyscia recorded her Baruch debut with eight points and nine rebounds.
Freshman Toni Fenn came off the bench in 21 minutes to score 12 points (6-9 fg), six rebounds and three blocked shots to help the defense frustrate the visitors from Hoboken, New Jersey. Vikki DeTata ran the point guard position with eight points (4-7 fg) and four assists.
Stevens struggled from the field shooting only 34 percent (19-56), including 3-of-18 from three-point range. Jillian Barrett led Stevens with 23 points and eight rebounds.
The Bearcats will next travel to upstate New York to compete on Friday, November 18, at the Rochester Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Rochester University of the University Athletic Association.
The team will battle Wittenberg University from the North Coast Atlantic Conference on Friday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
