Thunder Blow the Kilts off the Scots

ANGOLA, Ind. - A dominant defensive effort in the first half by the Trine University women's basketball team held off the College of Wooster's second half surge 69-56. The Thunder snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 7-3 on the season.

Wooster made the opening basket of the game, but from there Trine took over and never gave up the lead as junior Megan Loveberry (Quincy, Mich./Quincy) drained a three to give the Thunder the lead 5-3 just 1:30 into the game. Trine quickly pushed their lead to double-digits as they held the Fighting Scots to just two points over the course of five minutes of play. The Trine defense kept Wooster from reaching double-digits until the 11:21 mark. With four minutes remaining in the half, the Thunder held a 14 point lead at 31-17 but the Fighting Scots finished the half on a 7-2 run to close the gap to 33-24 at the break. In the first half, Trine forced 16 Wooster turnovers into 18 points.

Wooster opened the second half on a 17-10 run to close the Trine lead to just two points with just over 11 minutes to play. The defense stepped up once again for the Thunder as they held the Fighting Scots to just five points over a five minute period as Trine was able to push their lead to nine. Wooster converted out a three point play with 5:24 to play, cutting the Trine lead to six, but that would be as close as they would get. Trine held Wooster to just one point through the final minute of the game as they pushed their lead back to double-digits that the Fighting Scots were unable to overcome. Wooster was able to take advantage of Trine errors in the second half, as they scored 14 points off turnovers.

Loveberry led the Thunder with 20 points, including nailing four shots from long range. Senior Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) added in 16 points to go along with a game-high six assists and five rebounds. Loveberry and Senf each grabbed a game-high six steals, a season-high for Loveberry. Junior Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, Ind./Southern Wells) also scored in double-digits with 11 points while pulling down five rebounds and blocking a game-high three shots. Both junior Sydney Spragg (Reading, Mich./Reading) and freshman Sicily Boyce (Ashley, Ind./Prairie Heights) just missed out on double-doubles. Boyce finished the afternoon with nine points and nine rebounds while Spragg ended with nine points and eight rebounds.

Wooster was led by Jessica Wingen who finished with a double-double, 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Trine out-shot the Fighting Scots 39-to-35.2 percent from the floor for the game. Trine has held every opponent this season to under 40 percent shooting from the floor. Both sides shots nearly identical percentages from the free throw line as the Thunder held a slim 70.8-to-70.6 advantage. The Fighting Scots held a small advantage on the boards as they out-rebounded the Thunder 40-to-38.

Trine will take several days off to spend the holidays with their family before they head south to Dayton Beach, Florida. The Thunder will participate in the Land of Magic Classic where they will take on Central (IA) on December 28 at 10:00 a.m. followed by Maywood on December 30 at noon.
