ANGOLA, Ind. - A dominating defensive performance by the Trine University women's basketball team led the Thunder to a 49-24 win over Kalamazoo College. The Thunder snapped a four game losing streak to improve their record to 10-11 on the season and 4-8 in the conference.

The game started out slow for both sides as they combined for just 12 points in the first six minutes. The Hornets held their only lead of the game after they hit a three at the 16:47 mark to take a 3-2 lead. After both offenses went cold for a span of four minutes, the Thunder broke free scoring six unanswered points to take a 20-11 lead. Trine headed into the locker room with a 24-15 lead.

Trine struck quickly to open the second half as junior Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, Ind./Southern Wells) scored on a layup. Kalamazoo would answer right back scoring back-to-back baskets to pull within seven at 26-19. From there, the Thunder defense took over, shutting down the Hornets. Trine allowed just five points in the final 16:35, as they would out-score Kalamazoo 16-5, before shutting out the Hornets in the final 8:25 of the game.

Junior Sydney Spragg (Reading, Mich./Reading) led the Thunder with 13 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double. Fellow junior Megan Loveberry (Quincy, Mich./Quincy) and sophomore Megan Engle (Parker City, Ind./Monroe Central) each added in nine points. Freshman Sicily Boyce (Ashley, Ind./Prairie Heights) tied Spragg with a game-high nine boards while sophomore Lauren Tait (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) pulled down a season-high six rebounds. Senior Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) pulled down seven rebounds, while dishing out a game-high five assists and grabbing a game-high four steals. Killingbeck added in six points and five boards on the evening.

Trine held the Hornets to a season-low 24 points and 17.9 percent (10-of-56) shooting from the floor, which were also the lowest the Thunder have allowed this season. Trine allowed just nine points in the second half, the fewest they have allowed in a half this year. Kalamazoo attempted a season-low two free throws on the night, while the Thunder made 9-of-16. Trine out-rebounded the Hornets 50-37, marking only the third time the season the Thunder have pulled down more boards than an opponent.

The 24 points allowed by Trine is the fewest they have allowed in the past decade, and the fewest since holding Alma to 33 points on January 17, 2009.

The Thunder will look to avenge an early season loss when they roll into Adrian on February 4 for a 3:00 p.m. game.
