ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Edgewood College women's basketball finished their 2011-12 season on a high note, defeating Rockford College 69-58 in a Northern Athletics Conference Challenge Game. The Eagles shot 48.4 percent in the second half to thwart the Regents' attempt at a comeback. The Eagles finish the season 10-15 overall.
Edgewood College led wire-to-wire, thanks to an 8-3 run to open the game on the back of points from Alison Tobin. Tobin went eventually go 7-for-11 from the field and score a season-high 20 points. A three-pointer by Allison Novitske gave the Eagles their largest lead of the first half at 18-9 with 11:40 to play. The Regents got back to within three at 23-20, but back-to-back baskets from Brittany Bylsma and another hoop from Novitske helped lift the Eagles to a 31-24 halftime advantage.
The Regents' Britney Curry kept Rockford College (5-20) within five points at 46-41, but an 8-0 run capped by a three-point basket from Sadie Ewing put the Eagles back ahead 54-41 with less than 10 minutes to play. Ewing, a senior, scored 15 points in 40 minutes of action and had a team-high six assists in her final game for the Eagles.
After Tobin and Ewing, Chelsey Watkins was next in scoring for the Eagles with 13 points on 6-for-15 shooting. Tobin and Ewing had seven rebounds each to lead Edgewood College on the glass. The Eagles other senior, Melanie Walker, was forced to sit out the game with an illness.
Rockford College received 21 points from Curry and another 20 from Dani Buttel. The Eagles held the Regents to just 33.3 percent shooting for the game.
Edgewood College finished the season at 10-15 and missed out on qualifying for the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament for the first time in school history.
