Mount Saint Vincent athletic director John 'Jay' Butler has announced the appointment of Kevin Clifford as the department's newest head coach and assistant director of athletics. Clifford will guide the men's and women's cross country programs in the fall and will take the helm of the women's basketball team for the 2012-13 season.

Clifford brings nearly a decade of college coaching experience to the Mount after spending seven years with basketball squads at the City College of New York. Clifford served as a men's assistant coach during the 2005-06 and 2011-12 seasons and guided the women's team for five years from 2006-11.

CCNY compiled a 31-83 record in Clifford's five years at the helm, bookended by an 0-24 record in 2006-07 and a 1-14 mark in 2010-11 before he was replaced by Jackee Meadow.

"When one door closes another one opens up. I am very excited to be part of the Mount Saint Vincent family. I am ready to do whatever it takes to move these three programs to the next level," stated Clifford.

"I appreciate the opportunity here at the Mount and I look forward to the challenges ahead."

While with the men's team at CCNY, Clifford assisted in the day-to-day operation of the program including recruiting, conditioning and individual skill work with the back court players.

As the head coach of the women's team at CCNY, Clifford was involved in all aspects of the program. He planned and ran practices, headed film exchange and camps, recruited student-athletes, assisted in academic progress and ran team fundraisers.

Following his five seasons with the Beavers, Clifford sits fifth all-time in wins at CCNY. Off the court his team picked up the department's most improved grade point average, rising from a 2.5 in 2007-08 to an impressive 3.5 following the 2008-09 season.

He also mentored an ECAC Division Player of the Year, as well as an Atlantic Region and CUNAY Rookie of the Year during his tenure.

Clifford also had administrative duties at CCNY and held the title of Athletic Business manager. In that capacity he served as the equipment and business manager while overseeing S.A.A.C and the weekly facility schedule.

In addition to his college coaching experience, Clifford spent four years on the staff at St. Francis Prep and coached on the AAU circuit for eight seasons.

A four year college basketball player at the Division I and Division II levels, Clifford earned his bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in education from Sacred Heart in 1999. He went on to complete his master's in elementary education at CCNY in 2003.

Clifford currently resides in Middle Village, N.Y.
