PASADENA, CA – In the season opener for the Caltech women's basketball team, Oberlin (OH) came into Braun Gym and posted a 72-31 win over the Beavers.
The Yeowomen started the game fast and never looked back. Oberlin scored the game's first 12 points and held the Beavers scoreless through contest's first 6:30 minutes.
Oberlin continued to grow that lead with a solid inside game during the first 20 minutes. The visitors posted a 24-10 scoring edge down low in helping them head into the locker room with a 33-12 advantage.
In the second half the Yeowomen mixed it up a bit more as they hit five shots from behind the arc in addition to scoring 16 points in the paint.
Caltech's starting line-up featured three first-year players as Kristin Anderson, Esther Du and Stephanie Wong were all making their collegiate debuts on Friday afternoon.
Wong posted a team high 11 points for the Beavers in 35 minutes of action.
Christina Marquette recorded a double-double with a 21-point, 14-rebound performance. Malisa Hoak just missed a triple-double with an eight-point, eight-rebound, 10-assist afternoon.
The game was a part of the annual Caltech/Occidental Thanksgiving Classic. In the afternoon's first game, Whitworth posted a 67-62 win over Occidental. Leading the way for the Pirates was Kendra Lahue's 20-point, 11-rebound effort. Whitworth never trailed in the second half overcame a 32-point, 14-rebound performance from Occidental's Brandon Makenzie.
On Saturday afternoon the four teams get together at Occidental with Caltech playing Whitworth at 1 p.m. then Occidental hosts Oberlin at 3 p.m.
