WATERTOWN, Wis. – After a 10 day break, the Edgewood College women's basketball team was finally back in action, but could not seem to find their rhythm. The Eagles held Maranatha Baptist to 0-for-10 shooting from the floor, but only converted 28.6 percent of their field goals as they fell to the Crusaders 65-49 on Tuesday night in the MBBC Gymnasium.
Edgewood College's (10-12, 9-6) struggled shooting the ball right from the tipoff as the Eagles only converted one of their first nine shots to put themselves in an early 13-3 hole. In that time frame, Edgewood College also had difficulty taking care of the ball, with six costly turnovers. Trailing 18-9, the Eagles began to rally as they scored five straight points, cutting their deficit to four. Maranatha Baptist (14-5, 10-5 NAC) built their lead back to eight before Dareon Henderson hit a jumper and Rachel Pope knocked down a free throw to make the score 24-19 at the break. Edgewood College missed all four triples in the first half while only hitting 24.1 percent (7-for-29) of their shots from the field in the half.
Back-to-back layups by Mariah Hill and Alison Tobin brought the Eagles within one to start the half, but that immediately vanished following two straight buckets by the Crusaders. With 11:54 on the clock and the Eagles down by two, both defenses pressured the ball, forcing multiple missed shots. Two and half minutes passed on the clock before another bucket was finally made. Again Edgewood College was able to come within one, but then things took a turn for the worst. Over the next five minutes, the Crusaders went on a 12-2 run to push their lead to 11 and diminish Edgewood College's fight. Pope hit two free throws to end the drought, but six turnovers in the last two minutes did not help the Eagles' chances of making a comeback and Edgewood College fell by a 16-point margin.
Edgewood College grabbed over 40 rebounds for the fifth straight game, but their 23 turnovers were the most in 11 games which the Crusaders turned into 24 points. The entire game was a struggle from beyond the arc as the two teams combined to shoot 1-for-21 from beyond the arc, with the Eagles converting the only three-pointer. Shooting improved for Edgewood College in the second half, but still the Eagles only made 28.6 percent of their shots. Edgewood College's 49 total points was the least sice December 6 when the Eagles also scored 49.
Hill was the only Edgewood College player to reach double figures as she cashed in 15 points. Tobin, Melanie Walker, andChelsey Watkins each tallied eight rebounds.
Although Edgewood College fell tonight, the Eagles can clinch a Northern Athletics Conference playoff spot with a win over Lakeland College on Thursday. Tipoff for Thursday's game against the Muskies will be at 7:00 p.m. from the Edgedome. Live stats and live video will be provided with links found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
