SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --- The Colby College women's basketball team held Maine Maritime Academy to just 20.7 percent field goal shooting in a 55-29 victory in the consolation game of the Naismith Classic on Wednesday at Springfield College.
The Mules looked good defensively on New Year's Day, holding the Mariners to just two points in the opening 13:34 of the game to take a 16-2 lead. Maine Maritime had scored the opening two points of the game.
The Mariners cut the margin to 16-8 with 4:22 to halftime, but Colby's Brooke Chandor nailed a 3-point shot with 4:03 to play and the Mules kept a double digit lead the rest of the way. Chandor added an assist on Carylanne Wolfington's deep 3-point shot at the buzzer for a 26-10 lead at the break.
The Mules went on a 6-2 run to start the second half to go up 32-12. The final margin of 26 points was the largest lead of the game for Colby (4-7 overall).
Wolfington had 14 points, eight rebounds, and three assists for the Mules. Chandor shot 4-for-6 from the field on the way to 10 points and five rebounds, while Mia Diplock had nine points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Desi Smith, who had 15 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Drew University on Tuesday, earned all-tournament team honors with eight points and five boards Wednesday. Jen Nale also had eight points for the winners.
Colby had only 10 turnovers in the game and allowed the Mariners just a 2-for-2 effort from the foul line. MMA shot just 13.8 percent (4-for-29) from the field in the opening half.
Rebekah Campbell earned all-tournament team honors for the Mariners (4-6 overall), leading the team with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Mules are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. at home against University of Maine at Farmington.
