Cortland Women Defeat Brockport, 56-45, Behind Frasier's 21 Points

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Rae Frasier (Schenectady) made 10-of-12 shots and finished with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds as Cortland defeated Brockport, 56-45, in a SUNYAC contest at Corey Gymnasium.

The Red Dragons improved to 14-4 overall and 8-3 in the SUNYAC. They remain in a tie for second place in the league standings with New Paltz, two games behind league leader Geneseo.

Junior Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) and sophomore Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) each finished with 10 points and senior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) registered six assists and three steals for the Red Dragons, who shot 50 percent in the first half and 48 percent overall.

Brockport (5-13, 3-8 SUNYAC) was paced by Olivia Suhr's 21 points and six rebounds. Faith Welch scored 12 points and dished out four assists. The Golden Eagles were held to 30 percent shooting from the field. Both team struggled from 3-point range with Cortland hitting only 1-of-10 treys and Brockport 4-of-25 from the arc.

Frasier, making her first start in a Cortland uniform, scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the opening half. The Red Dragons trailed 13-8 with 13:31 left in the period after a 7-0 Brockport run that featured four points by Welch sandwiched around a Suhr 3-pointer. Cortland answered with an 8-0 run on four points each from Dumas and Chapko and led 16-13 with 10:53 left.

Leading 16-15, Cortland rattled off 12 straight points in less than four minutes, starting with a Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) 3-pointer and capped buckets from Frasier and Chapko. The Red Dragons led by nine at halftime, 32-23.

Brockport hung around for much of the second half. The Golden Eagles were within 38-31 after a Hannah Rehbaum free throw with 11:51 left and were still down only 10 when Suhr buried a trey with 5:59 left. Rando's two free throws at the 4:12 mark pushed the lead to 12, and neither team scored again until Dumas sank two foul shots with 1:52 left. Cortland's lead did not dip below 11 from that juncture.

Cortland will play at Buffalo State Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Fredonia Saturday at 4 p.m. in a pair of SUNYAC matchups.
