MILWAUKEE -- A 10-point Alverno College first-half lead was erased as the visiting Aurora University Spartans rallied to defeat the Inferno, 69-63, Tuesday evening inside Reiman Gymnasium.
Alverno shot 55 percent from the field in the first half -- which included a 6-of-7 performance from long range -- for a 40-30 lead at the break.
Yet Aurora (5-7, 4-3 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) cut the deficit to three at the end of the third quarter, and took the lead with 5 minutes, 35 second to play in the fourth, a lead it wouldn't surrender.
The Spartans made 21-of-27 free throws, while the Inferno (6-7, 3-5 NACC) got to the foul line just six times in the contest.
Rookies Mackenzie Mathies and Donna Zehner led Alverno in the scoring column with 16 and 15 points -- both season highs -- and sophomore Gabby Hood chipped in nine.
Bethany Dornington was one of four Spartans in double figures with a game-high 21 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field, while Anna Roszkowski snagged a game-high 16 boards as Aurora outrebounded the Inferno 46-28.
Alverno stays home inside Reiman Gymnasium for its next action Saturday versus Concordia University Wisconsin.
