MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Ramapo College, 80-55 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Monday night.
The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23rd, but was moved due to the weather. The Profs have an overall record of 16-2 and they are 10-1 in the NJAC. The Roadrunners are 4-14 overall and they have a 2-9 conference mark.
Guard forward Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench. Guard/forward Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) tallied 12 points. Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) recorded 10 points and 10 boards. Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) collected 10 points. Guard Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) contributed with nine points.
For Ramapo, center Grace Elliott (sr. Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day School) had 13 points and seven rebounds. Forward Kellie Lane (jr. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) added 12 points. Guard Doris Illic (jr. Guttenberg, NJ/North Bergen) chipped in with eight points.
Rowan scored the first six points of the contest on baskets by Matthews (9:19), guard Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) (7:25) and Lake (6:28). The Profs led 11-4 (2:54) then scored nine straight to extend the advantage to 16 (20-4) with 1:11 on the clock. Four different Rowan players scored. The Profs had a 20-5 lead after one.
Elliott got Ramapo to within 13 (22-9) with 7:54 remaining in the second. Rowan collected the next six points, expanding the cushion to 19 (30-11) at the 5:18 mark. The Profs were in front by at least 15 points for the remainder of the quarter and took a 37-22 lead into the break.
Schullstrom (9:48) and Lake (9:30) hit back-to-back three pointers to start the third. A Matthews jumper made it a 20-point spread (45-25) with 6:22 left. The Profs extended the lead to 25 points after a Matthews basket (0:21) and took the advantage to the final quarter. Rowan led by as many as 33 points (76-43) in the final frame and Ramapo could only get as close as 22 points (77-55) in the final minute.
Rowan returns home to face Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.
