AURORA, Illinois -- Visiting Alverno College was unable to hold on to a late lead and lost to Aurora University, 63-60, Wednesday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
Katelyn Bartlett put the Inferno (8-10, 5-8 NACC) ahead, 60-59, with 2:17 remaining, but it would be the final basket for the visitors.
The Spartans' (10-8, 9-4) Bethany Dorrington answered with the final go-ahead score on the next possession and added a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left on the clock for the three-point spread. Brook McBain's game-tying 3-point attempt as time expired was off the mark.
Mollie Mikyska led Alverno with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Gabby Hood added nine points, a team-high 11 rebounds and five assists.
The Inferno led 50-45 at the end of the third quarter, but was outscored 18-10 in the fourth.
The closely contested contest had 10 ties and 12 lead changes.
Alverno returns home Saturday for its next action, a 7 p.m. tipoff with Marian University.
