No. 1 Hope Stifles Grove City in Record Fashion

With a historic defensive effort, the top-ranked Hope College women's basketball team opened NCAA Division III Tournament play with a 69-18 victory against Grove City College (Pennsylvania) on Friday.

The Flying Dutch shattered team records for points allowed in a game at DeVos Fieldhouse and posts allowed in postseason play.

Hope (28-0 overall) advanced to Saturday's 7 p.m. second-round game against Illinois Wesleyan, a 76-50 winner against Berea College (Kentucky) in Friday's first game.

Against Grove City (25-3), Hope yielded no more than four points in each of the final three quarters.

The Flying Dutch surpassed the previous DeVos Fieldhouse record for points allowed of 28, accomplished twice previously, and points allowed in an NCAA Tournament game of 37.

Offensively, Hope was led by a pair of nine-points efforts: junior forward Jess Moorman and freshman forward Claire Baguley.
