Hood falls despite big day from Anderson

CHESTER, Pa. - Hood College's Morgan Anderson had 23 points and 12 rebounds but Widener proved too much as the Pride landed a 67-55 win over the Blazers in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.  
  
Inside the Box Score   

  • Anderson recorded her fourth double-double of the season. The senior went 11-of-22 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds. She also added a block and a pair of steals. 

  • Marlise Newson scored 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting. 

  • Nikki Etchison grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and played all 40 minutes. 

How it Happened   

  • Hood controlled the first four minutes of the game as the Blazers went up 7-4 after a layup by Anderson assisted by Etchison. Widener went on a 15-2 run to take over the lead 19-9 following a free throw by the Pride's Jasmine Franklin with 2:20 remaining. The Pride closed out the quarter with an 11-point lead after free throws by Mikayla Nicoloni, 21-10.  

  • Widener got off to a quick start in the second quarter as the Pride scored back-to-back layups to push the lead to 15, 25-10 with 9:22 left in the period. For the next seven minutes both teams traded baskets until a layup by Newson cut the deficit to 10 points, 33-23 with 2:19 remaining. The Pride and the Blazers continued in a back-and-forth battle to end the first half. Widener led, 37-27 at halftime. 

  • In the third quarter, a pair of field goals by Widener's Erin Phelan and a jumper by Franklin gave the Pride their largest lead 47-31 with 4:53 remaining in the period. A hook shot by Anderson with 38 seconds left cut the deficit to 11 at the end of the period, 49-38. 

  • Kayla Watkins-Harvey scored six of the Blazer's seven points in a 7-2 run in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter as the Blazers pulled with six, 51-45. A jumper by Widener's Rachel's Ludwig started an 8-0 run that stretched the Pride's advantage to 59-45 with 3:42 on the clock.   

Analysis   

  • Hood edged Widener 40-38 in rebounds and 34-32 in points in the paint. 

  • The Pride had 18 steals on Hood's 25 turnovers, resulting in a 21-5 advantage in points off turnovers.  

For the opponent   

  • Phelan led all scorers with 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting. 

  • Franklin tallied 12 points and added seven rebounds. 

  • Nicole Barnes grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and seven assists. 

Notes   

  • Hood slipped to 5-11 on the season and 2-7 in the MAC Commonwealth. 

  • Widener improved to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
