In Division III basketball, "March Madness" starts in mid-February. There are 42 automatic qualifying bids (AQs) into the 64-team NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament and 41 of those AQs were awarded to conference tournament winners. The UAA is the lone conference that awards its AQ to its regular season champion, which is New York University.
There's one Pool B bid reserved for teams that are independents or in conferences that do not have an automatic bid. That bid will likely go to Berea as regular season champion of the Collegiate Conference of the South. And that leaves 21 at-large bids for everyone else.
Conference playoffs start with first-round games as early as February 16 and then run through the last championship games on Sunday, February 26.
