Carnegie Mellon Secures Second Place UAA Finish with 62-51 Win at Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team finished the road weekend with a 62-51 win at Brandeis University on Sunday, February 23 to move to 19-5 for the year and 9-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges dropped to 12-12 and 5-8.

How it Happened

  • The Judges shot 46.2% from the floor in the first quarter to lead 15-9.
  • The Tartans answered by taking the second quarter by a 13-9 score to trail by two at the break.
  • In a pivotal third quarter, the Tartans shot 53.3% and made 4-of-6 from beyond the arc while the Judges were just 3-of-14 (21.4%) from the floor to hold a 10-point lead going into the final frame.
  • A 13-3 run to start the third quarter was the push the Tartans needed. They made three of their four three-pointers during the run.
  • Senior Catherine Or added seven points to her game-leading first half 14 points in the frame while junior Nicole Timko connected on two three-pointers to score six points.
  • Senior Isha Nambisan grabbed four rebounds in the third quarter to help the Tartans lead the category for the 10-minute period.
  • Junior Savannah Gibbs and Timko combined for eight points in the first 2:22 of the final quarter to push the Tartans to their largest lead at 16 points.
  • The Judges pulled to within seven points with just more than two minutes to play but the Tartans made 8-of-12 from the free throw line to end the game with an 11-point win.

  • Or finished with a season-high tying 27 points, five assists, and three rebounds.
  • Timko closed with 14 points and four rebounds.
  • Senior Anisha Chintala added seven points while Nambisan and freshman Payton Baney led the team with five rebounds each.

Judge Stats

  • Katherine Vaughan recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Lulu Ohm and Abby Kennedy added 11 points each.

Notes

  • The Tartans will finish second in the UAA for just the second time in school history, joining the 1991-92 team with the finish.
  • The nine wins for the Tartans in UAA play is the most since the 1991-92 season when the team finished 10-4.
  • The program last won at least 19 games in the 2016-17 season when they finished 21-7 overall with an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship and 18-7 in the regular season.
