Three double-digit scorers couldn't stop the Hope College women's basketball team from dropping the first showdown of the season against Trine University on Wednesday.
The ninth-ranked Flying Dutch lost at Trine, 67-61, snapping an eight-game winning streak.
Hope fell to 11-2 on the season and 4-1 in MIAA play. The Thunder (10-3 overall) seized sole possession of first place in the league standings.
The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m. at home against The University of Olivet. It is Poster Day, with post-game autographs.
Sophomore Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) topped Hope with 15 points. Junior Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison) chipped in 14 points and a team-best four assists. Senior Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) scored 13 points and blocked a game-high three shots.
The game featured 11 lead changes and 11 tie scores.
The Flying Dutch led 42-41 after the third quarter and 53-52 after a split at the line from sophomore Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / South Christian) with 4:11 remaining in regulation.
Trine's Annika Southworth followed by sinking her third 3-pointer of the quarter, giving the Thunder the lead for good.
Southworth scored 13 of her 17 points during Trine's 26-point fourth quarter. Teammate Madison Wagner contributed eight of her game-high 21 points over the final 10 minutes.
Hope and Trine will meet again in the regular-season finale on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.
