Saratoga Springs, NY – Too many turnovers allowed the home team to score frequently off those miscues as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped a 68-47 decision to Skidmore College in Liberty League action on Friday evening.
The Golden Knights fell to 9-13 overall and 5-10 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds edged forward to 10-12 and 8-7. Clarkson looks to regroup against William Smith College on Saturday.
Skidmore employed pressure on the Golden Knights, forcing eight turnovers in the first period, but Clarkson did enough to stay close in the opening 10 minutes. The Thoroughbreds had the early lead, but a Maddy Polky 3-pointer from the corner gave the Knights a 9-8 lead. Skidmore eventually regained the lead, only to see an Addie Kea last second layup pull Clarkson back within one (12-11).
The first possession of the second quarter was a harbinger of things to come as Skidmore forced a turnover and scored on a layup. That began a streak of scoring for the Thoroughbreds, an 11-0 run before Fallon Griffin's layup ended the scoreless streak for the Knights at 5:00. The Thoroughbreds scored 22 points in the second quarter, nearly doubling their first period output, to gain an 18-point lead at the break.
The second quarter saw Skidmore force nine turnovers, pushing the team's points off turnovers to 21-0 in the first half.
In the third, Clarkson cleaned up its offense without turning the ball over as much, but the Thoroughbreds shot better, going 9-for-15 in the quarter with three 3-pointers. Clarkson was able to match the 3-point output, but unable to keep pace on the shots inside the arc, going 5-for-14 overall. The gap through the first three quarters was 23 points and while the Knights made up a bit of the deficit in the fourth, they were unable to overwhelm Skidmore for a complete comeback.
Fallon Griffin led Clarkson scorers with 14 points, taking sole possession of the Liberty League scoring lead (14.0 ppg). Addie Kea added 10 points, while Emma Chambers and Elizabeth Aiossa contributed nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
For Skidmore, Sophia Martinez scored 16 points, shooting 6-for-50 from the floor. Interior players Claudia Schneider and Ruby Krop also reached double figures, notching 12 points and 10 points. Martinez also chipped in seven assists while Madison Meyer recorded six steals.
