Derek Bailey scored all five of the Little Giants' points in overtime as Wabash jumped out to a 69-64 lead and held on to knock off No. 1 Wooster 69-68 in overtime at Wooster. The No. 15 Little Giants, in need of a win after losing at Denison on Thursday night, had four scorers in double figures, including Aaron Zinnerman's 17 points and 13 from Bailey and Nick Curosh.
Wes Smith shot just 2-for-16 from the floor and was held to 11 in the win, but stole the ball from Wooster's Ian Franks on the final possession of the game to seal the win. It was the first loss for Wooster after 20 wins to open the season.
Two other No. 1 votes went into play Saturday night as well, as No. 3 Augustana, in the top spot of two D3hoops.com ballots, fell 65-58 to Carthage. Steve Djurickovic led the Red Men with 27 points. Carthage turned the ball over just five times on the night.
No. 9 UW-River Falls shot 0-for-9 from 3-point range in the first half and trailed by as many as 10 before rallying to tie the game on three separate occasions, but UW-Whitewater came through on the road to upset the Falcons 70-66. The Falcons shot just 2-for-18 from beyond the arc on the afternoon. Chris Davis led the Warhawks with 17 points.
Second-ranked Whitworth, which received the other three No. 1 votes, had little trouble at Pacific Lutheran as Jack Loofburrow poured in 31 points and David Riley added 21 in the Pirates' 85-59 victory. No. 5 Amherst survived to remain unbeaten as well, taking a 60-59 lead with 4:14 left and holding off Bates. Conor Meehan finished with a game-high 21 points.
Grinnell was held to a mortal point total but it was effective as the Pioneers knocked off No. 12 St. Norbert 79-65. Grinnell forced 28 turnovers and kept the Green Knights at bay despite seeing their lead cut to four twice in the second half. Sophomore Griffin Lentsch scored a team-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. J.J. Martin came off the bench to score 17 for No. 20 Marietta as the Pioneers beat Ohio Northern 68-58. Senior Kyle Nadeau drained five of WPI's 10 3-pointers as the No. 13 Engineers opened up a 30-12 lead in a 78-46 win over Wheaton (Mass.). It's WPI's 11th consecutive victory.
DePauw shot 54 percent in the second half and won at No. 17 Centre, 65-63. It was the Tigers' first win in Danville since 2002. Ryan Sever scored a team-high 17 points. Greensboro's Damian Dixon hit a buzzer beater at the end of regulation to force overtime but No. 19 Ferrum pulled away in the extra period to win 78-67.
Wesley got Chris Douglas back and needed almost all of his 21 points to extend its winning streak to 10 as the Wolverines won at Frostburg State 79-70. Mike McClary set another Olivet scoring record, this the school's single-season mark as the Comets beat Calvin 71-69.
Dick Meader earned his 400th career victory as Maine-Farmington beat Castleton State 89-88 in overtime. In 35 seasons of coaching at Thomas (1972-1988) and UMF, Farmington (1993-present), Meader is 400-455.
And we cap the wrapup with a buzzer beater. Darnell Malabet hit a jumper as time expired to lift host Immaculata to a 62-60 win over visiting Rosemont in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action.
