Wednesday: One for you, one for me

UW-Platteville was able to slow down Paige Seckar and UW-Oshkosh just enough on Wednesday night to deal the Titans their first loss of the season.

No. 21 UW-Platteville ended No. 3 UW-Oshkosh’s bid for an undefeated run through the WIAC while No. 11 John Carroll and Rhode Island College earned regular season splits with their conferences’ front runners in Wednesday night’s Division III women’s basketball action.

UW-Platteville grinded out a gutty win at previously unbeaten UW-Oshkosh, 47-43, thanks to two clutch plays by senior guard Madalyn Reichmann in the final minute.

After falling behind 37-30 early in the fourth period, the Pioneers went a 10-0 run capped by Ava Hanson’s three-point play. The Titans pulled even on two Avery Poole free throws with 42 seconds left, but Reichmann put UW-Platteville back in front with a jumper. UW-Oshkosh turned the ball over on its next possession, and then Reichmann found Tatum Weir for a layup that put the game away.

Reichmann had nine points and three assists on a night where offense was hard to find. The Pioneers (16-4, 6-3 WIAC) shot 33 percent from the floor and just 3-for-18 from three. The Titans (19-1, 8-1 WIAC) shot modestly better but also had 13 turnovers against seven assists.

The Titans still hold a two-game lead on the rest of their conference and should also remain atop the NCAA’s National Power Index. UW-Oshkosh entered the day ranked first ahead of No. 2 Washington and Lee (70-28 winners over Eastern Mennonite).

The Pioneers' win pulls them into a three-way tie for second in the WIAC standings with No. 10 UW-Whitewater and No. 22 UW-La Crosse. The Warhawks downed the Eagles, 64-47, to earn a split in that regular season series. UW-Platteville hosts UW-La Crosse on Saturday.

No. 11 John Carroll went on the road and knocked off No. 7 Ohio Wesleyan in overtime, 70-65, tightening the NCAC race. Despite strong play in the paint on offense, JCU allowed the Battling Bishops to continue chipping away. Points on five consecutive possessions by the Battling Bishops led to a JCU timeout with 3 minutes to play and OWU on top, 58-53. But crucially during the media timeout, the referees conducted a review of a Battling Bishops triple that did not beat the shot clock buzzer several possessions before. And so, the deficit slimmed to 55-53. At the 1:44 mark, Ava Ryncarz nailed a triple to retake the lead. A JCU foul on the ensuing possession allowed for two OWU foul shots, one of which was made. Neither team could score in the final 1:23, so the game took extra time. OWU scored the first two points in overtime, but the Blue Streaks scored the next nine and made enough free throws in the final minutes to preserve the victory. Ryncarz paced John Carroll (18-2, 7-2 NCAC) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Kendall Dieringer scored 13 off the bench for Ohio Wesleyan (17-2, 8-1 NCAC), which now shares first place with No. 9 Denison and sees its 22-game NCAC win streak snapped. The Big Red won big at home over DePauw, 57-40.

The Centennial Conference race effectively ended when No. 4 Johns Hopkins held off rival Gettysburg on the road, 66-63. Olivia Jones’ three-point play pulled the Bullets within three in the final minute, and Gettysburg had a chance to tie but missed its final shot. Lauren Knudsen scored a career-high 21 points for the Blue Jays (19-0, 10-0 Centennial) which has a two-game lead and the tiebreaker over second place Gettysburg with five games remaining.

The same is true in the MWC where No. 19 Ripon defeated second-place Lawrence, 68-53, and pushed its lead to 3.5 games with four remaining. Natalie Rauwolf scored 14 points for the Red Hawks, which went 7 for 8 from three.

Abby Wager scored 29 points to lead Rhode Island College past No. 25 Southern Maine, 70-62, ending the Huskies’ 16-game winning streak. The Anchorwomen controlled the glass with a 40-24 rebounding advantage, thanks 10 boards from Wager and seven more from Meagan Schuermann. Rhode Island College (16-5, 10-2 LEC) splits the regular season series with Southern Maine, but remains a half-game behind the Huskies because of an early season loss to Western Connecticut.

  • DeSales defended its home court and its perch atop the MAC Freedom conference by downing Lebanon Valley, 49-43. Aubrey Pollard finished a point shy of a double-double (nine points, 12 rebounds) for the Bulldogs who maintain a one-game lead on Arcadia.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran turned the ball over 27 times and struggled from the foul line, but the Warriors still found a way to get past Aurora, 70-64, in overtime. Margie Stevens and Jayden Hill combined for 32 points and 27 rebounds for Wisconsin Lutheran (15-5, 11-1 NACC), which remains tied for first with St. Norbert.
  • McKenzie Matheny posted 20 points and 10 rebounds, giving her four straight double-doubles, and Randolph-Macon rolled past Bridgewater, 65-60. The Yellow Jackets move within a game of Bridgewater for second place in the ODAC, while the Eagles are now two games behind No. 6 Washington and Lee.
  • Alline Ballard scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Cal Lutheran over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 69-62 in a battle between the top two teams in the SCIAC. The Regals (18-3, 10-2 SCIAC) are now tied for first with the Athenas with four games remaining.
